This bad terminology has been around for a long time. My dad’s 1960’s Sherwood amp (maybe an S-5000?) had a switch on the front labeled “PHASE NORM - REV”. That was to save you the trouble of reversing the speaker wires after you got them all connected to the screw terminals. Just choose which ever setting had more bass.
