Aha - two questions at once. My instruction manual says to tap [3]. " For the front-panel mic only, additional microphone gain can be enabled by tapping 3 . Use this only for very low-output mics. " I also tried 4,5, and 6 . . . I should have kept going :-)
I asked Elecraft about this. Apparently it is an error corrected in the "errata" document. Sigh. Anyway, yes, with this boost function I can run the mic gain around 30 and even with FP.L selected.
