A docking station would provide and RS232 with screw jacks, parallel port and lots more connectors. Docking stations are pretty nice to have for non-portable use. Just extract the laptop when you need it to go. No unplugging of cables.

I agree -- I'm looking online, and it appears that the connector is close to being non-functional.

Even if you could find a mating connector, unbolted DB9's fall out very easily.

I don't agree with that -- I've used DB9s fully mated without retaining screws with no problems.
