I think it's the REFRESH rate, and I believe it works in only one of the
modes -- tracking and fixed-tune -- can't remember which one and my P3
isn't hooked up right now.

Sure. Unfortunately, my email computer is not in the shack, and it's
raining, so I don't feel like running out to the shack to figure out
which menu setting does that. :) Poke around the menus and the manual.
It's there.
On the SVGA, it's possible to get more than a minute on screen.
