There have been a string of M-class flares for the last 30 hours or so. Initial ones were in the M.8-M.9 range, recent ones somewhat smaller. A was 8, Kp was 3 earlier this afternoon which wouldn't normally suggest terrible conditions, but I guess if the ionization is already very weak, any disturbance can have a large effect.
