Looking at the fundamentals (not often learned by some RF engineers, and almost never by digital engineers) any variation in the amplitude response of a system is accompanied by variation in the phase response. Ears don't like it, and decoders don't like it. Those engineers urging wide bandwidth for RTTY know those fundamentals.
