Clay, I believe it has to do with danger to your equipment should the connection between the battery and the chassis open. In that case all the current to all the automobile systems, from starter to lights to ignition, radio, etc., would flow through the ground path provided by the radio if it is connected directly to the negative battery terminal. Since that can be 100's of amperes when starting the engine, no radio is likely to survive.
