Dan . . . Were you running a pre-recorded message on button 1 (the PRE button)?
If you forgot to tap the MSG button first before you tapped button 1, then the PRE function would be operative, not the message-play function.

I was out this weekend doing the Bumblebee QRP contest (lousy conditions here in PNW!) and a couple of times I noticed that the preamp switched itself off. First time I thought I bumped the switch but it actually did it 2 more times. I was running 5W cw to a magloop carefully tuned to resonance as best I could tell.
