Thanks to all. I also confirmed this experimentally. However, even turning decode off on the rig, I still get spurious dropped characters from the utility.
It's not a showstopper to me because (a) I'm not looking to bring the computer along on field expeditions, and (b) I'm hoping at some near point in the future to use the CW decoder that is between my ears.
