Thanks Bob,

I looked at the USB-B connector again, unplugged from the WinKeyer and plugged into the KPA1500, no virtual port was created.

Elecraft agrees with you about the USB chip being bad.  They've sent me an RSA so the amp will go back for service.  I asked if we could do a board swap but they have other mods to make to the RF deck and that they will give the amp top priority repair status.

I used USBDeview, no PROLIFIC drivers and the three COM ports listed are all using FTDI drivers.  Nice utility, thanks.

Another possibility, especially if you are reaching behind the KPA1500 to insert the USB cable, and can't see the connectors well, is that you've accidentally pushed the square USB-B plug it into the square RJ-45 (Ethernet) connector instead of into the USB-B connector which is just above it.

    Ed,

Did you ever install any Prolific USB devices in your system?
Prolific Device Drivers are buggy and can often interfere with the
FTDI drivers.  Prolific Device Drivers can be uninstalled.

You can use the free USBDeview facility to look for this:

    https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html
    <https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html>

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click to download the
    64-bit version, (direct link
    https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usbdeview-x64.zip
    <https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usbdeview-x64.zip>). Unzip to empty
directory, then run usbdeview.exe. Scroll way over to the right
and click on the column header "Device Mfg" to sort by that
column.  Look for "Prolific" in the list.  Right click and
uninstall. Then reboot and reconnect the USB cable to the KPA1500.

If it's still not recognized, you may have a bad USB port on your amp.

I received my KPA-1500 s/n 56 last Friday and have it on the
air. All is well with the exception of not being able to use
the KPA-1500 Utility.  I do not get a notification sound from
the computer when I plug the USB cable into the computer. I've
reset the KPA-1500, tried different USB ports, no success.
        Any suggestions appreciated.
