ALC is fine as "belt and suspenders" protection for the amplifier's output stage. There are also issues with poorly designed rigs that produce overshoots at the beginning of TX when run below max output. W8JI has good info about this on his website. AFAIK, Elecraft rigs do not have a serious problem with this, although I do see a few dB when changing power on my K3.
