A couple of other techniques are to use a lint remover - one of those sticky roller things that take lint and hair off of clothes - and roll it over the desktop and floor - or a small hand vacuum (empty and wash the dirt cup first!) to carefully go over the whole area, then dump the debris out where you can pick through it carefully.
