Larry, you are correct that it will make no difference as long as the IC is inserted correctly, but I strongly suggest that you manually notch the other end of the socket (melt the plastic with your soldering iron tip, cut it with a knife, etc.) or put some permanent marking on the socket or board to call attention to this situation a year or two from now when you have forgotten about this error just in case you change the firmware.
