While the K3 concept of buying a newer "upgraded" synthesizer board for example,  rather than a new radio sounds like a great idea which will surely change the performance, I feel it is NOT a feasible solution, as it generates a worthless board that is only good as a pistol target.

To each his own. I own two 2008-vintage K3s, each with second RX, several roofing filters, 100W amp and tuner. I also own a single-RX K3, bought used from a list member, with no tuner, and the same selection of roofers. All three have the new synth board, and the first two have the new transverter interface (to get the improved preamp), the spare has the old one. I view the new I/O board more of a convenience by the integration of the USB interface, and I didn't go for it.

I consider these radios 90% of a K3S from a performance point of view. Indeed, when the K3S was introduced, I was able upgrade simply by buying those boards, without having to buy a new radio (as you would with any other manufacturer. That's one of the great things about Elecraft's way of doing things! And if I decided to sell them (not likely), I would describe them just as I have here -- 2008 vintage K3s with selected upgrades.
