When I was 4X4UQ in the mid-1960s I had to beat off the Europeans while running 75 watts into a tri-bander about 1 meter above the roof of a 4-story cinder-black building. Elecraft products weren't available yet but the TX was a Hallicrafters HT32B, RX was a Hallicrafters SX101. I still got 55 countries in almost 2 years with just casual QSOs.
