I made sure that I was listening on the right sideband (twice), the RX EQ was 
flat and all DSP was off to the best of my knowledge. I did the hard reset and 
recalibrated the reference osc. Seems to be better, but I need to check it 
again at daytime.
Thanks for your hints guys, there are so many settings, it is really hard to 
keep track of all of them .

audio.  And I find a more destructive audio path item is Noise 
Reduction.  The setting of that feature will greatly affect the receive 
audio.  See page 6, 11, & 27 in the manual for details on this feature.
