Now in my mid seventies I have embraced the idea of conservation of energy. Digging in radials does not interest me. Likewise, catching them in lawn equipment is also a PIA. So, here is what I have done and it has worked well. I trim the grass.  Then I use a length of string and stretch it out along the path of the future radial. Next I take a "weed-wacker" and shorten the grass a bit more. Now I use any old available can of spray paint and spray a few marks along the length of the string. Remember to roll up the string now - no longer needed. Then I take my radial wire, make the connection at the antenna base and stretch the wire out along the marked path. Depending of the levelness/evenness of the surface I then take a nail and make one wrap of the radial around the nail, tighten the wire so it is straight with no loops and insert the nail into the dirt. Do this along the length of the radial. Typically I do it about every 10 to 15 feet. In a couple of days the grass grows and the wire is so low (deeply embedded) in the grass that mowing will not be an issue. The entire radial system need not be done at one time and it is easy to add radials if you wish. HINT - get a grandchild to help, or a neighborhood youngster or a person working toward their license or one of the younger club members or ..... anyone but yourself. Remember however to compensate them for their time and effort!

Waxing about old ham lore, a "Strays" item on page 132 of the December
1946 QST has W6KA repeating advice from W3LPY and W1MJH that
"Simonizing" 300 ohm line (or using floor wax) will "eliminate the
impedance change during rainy weather."

Paul, N6LL - current Trustee of W6KA

p.s.- That would be the impedance presented to the transmitter which
changes, not the characteristic impedance of the line.

Based on my measurements and method I used to measure 100 ft of window

the wet line does show a velocity factory change, in effect an
electrical change in line length, and thus when connected to an
antenna, will have a small effect on the impedance at the station end
of the line.

I really think and believe many comments and opinions regarding window
line, are more "old ham lore" not based on true and complete facts.

Good discussion as I was thinking to use window line in my new 630m -
40m antenna.

Maybe revert to running parallel lines spaced 1-foot with spreaders only
at top and bottom of 40-foot vertical run.

I did that with my previous inverted-L with no weather related issues.
Impedance did shift between summer (unfrozen soil) and winter (frozen)
which was easily compensated by a change in loading coil tap.

Radials were lying on ground vs in-ground or suspended above ground.
New radial field will be planted in the soil a couple inches (so I can
mow the lawn without rolling up the radials each time).

My experience as well.? No real change in loss but the complex impedance
at the TX end does change enough to require a re-tune.? It used to be so
much simpler when the tank circuit on the PA served as both a matching
network and harmonic filter. ?

Bob, I own a Bird 43 and a few slugs. Problems for station use: It's not
autoranging, doesn't directly measure SWR, and it's a bit cumbersome to leave
on a shelf top. I tried yesterday and I didn't have a good place for it where
it wouldn't be in the way of something.

Steve ? To your point - they?re aimed at different uses.

I?ve got a W2 - quite happy with it. It?s perfect for what it does. Stays in
line, let?s me know what?s going on between the rig and the antenna, and I can
use it remotely ? which is how I generally operate ? even if remotely is just
one part of the house to another.

Would love to see a refresh and modernization - of the software if nothing
else. Maybe build the controller part on an ESP32 type platform. Make it WiFi
or Bluetooth connected? Who knows. Possibilities are endless.

Many of us remote operators have interfaced most watt meters that have an
RS232 port to be web based.

The investment can be as basic as a Raspberry PI, USB/RS232 adapter and the
cable that goes with the wattmeter. Using the NodeRed hardware integration
tool it will give you a web based access to the watt meter (and most other
devices).

I can see live RF transmission data such as RF power on my iPhone, Macbook,
PC or anything else that has a web browser on it.

There is a group on groups.io that has 95% of the hard work done for you
and you don't need to reinvent the wheel. Just bolt it on the car. :)

I have used it with my W2 and my LP100a. Very handy.

I have a K3, P3, KAT500 and KPA500. I was listening in the middle of a QSO and
lost signal.

I tested my antenna with a back up transceiver and the antenna and coax are
good.

The P3 still shows signals but only hiss comes out of the K3?s speaker.

Keying the k3 by pressing the attached foot pedal turns on the red Tx light on
the K3 but the display on the KPA500 shows an asterisk to the left of the power
out reading of zero on its display.

No signal goes to the antenna and nothing besides hiss comes out of the speaker.

What should I do next?

Thanks. W9ZD

Hi,

If it were me, I would bypass everything and feed the antenna directly
to the K3. If things work after that step, it is not the K3.

Again, if it were me, I would begin adding things back, one at a time,
until the failure returns. At that point, I would conclude that the
last device added was failed, and look there.

If it is the K3, I would then come back from my last backup of the
settings and see if that fixes things...

If that fails to bring the K3 back, I would re-post my question, with
all the test info I have gathered above.

I would call support, but the last time I called, I got a message, not a
person.

Does the USB port show up when you go to 'About This Mac' and then to 'System
Report' and then to 'Hardware:USB' ?
Assuming you are using a quality USB cable (from either Elecraft or Sabrent)
that uses the FTDI chip set, and not someother cable that uses a Prolific chip
set. (I have several USB devices on my Mac, and I keep careful track of which
iswhich by tracking their serial numbers as denoted by the /dev filenames in
addition to what 'About This Mac' displays,as I've run into problems in the
past, particularly when using Windows under Parallels, given how picky Windows
isabout device ports and ordering).
Does the port show up under another program, such as WSJT-X or JTDX? Were
either of those programs (or othersthat may be trying to use the particular USB
port) still running when you invoked the K3 Utility? I don't control my K3using
RUMlog (which I do use for logging), but it does have some rig control
capabilities, for example. I'm not familiarwith the other Mac logging programs
out there, so I can't comment on what effect they might have in your situation.

In terms of modernizing the Elecraft W2, I'm surprised no one so far has

I bought this KPA500 from the estate of a friend whois a SK.? I queried
Elecraft about themanufacture date and learned that the unit is factory built
and delivered inMarch 2014.? The unit was originally setup to operate on 220
vac.

I used my KUSB cable to connect the KPA500 to mycomputer, attached a dummy load
to the output, and connected the power cord tothe amp.? I had changed the fuse
blockand installed two 12-amp EC fuses that I checked for continuity,
reinstalledthe fuse holder so ?115 V? shows in the window, and made sure that
the fuseblock was fully seated.? I removed thecover and, since my line voltage
shows 123 vac, connected the yellowtransformer lead.

I set the rocker switch on the fuse block (3) to ON (!),then tapped the ?ON?
switch (11) on the front panel.? There was no response to the ?turn
on?procedure.? The KPA500 is as dead as a doornail.

I have spent several hours trying to troubleshootthis problem.? I have checked
my 120 vac,20 amp duplex outlet and a am sure that it is delivering power to
thecord.? I have substituted another power cord.? The safety interlock
(chicken) switch isdepressed by a pin mounted on the underside of the cover.? I
have tested this switch and tested the ampwith the switch ?locked? closed, no
joy.?
I have exhausted all thetroubleshooting ideas that are within my capabilities.? I
hope that another KPA500 owner may be ableto provide information that I can use to
get my amp up & running.? Thanks, Sam N1OVA? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Aaron,

I suspect that the firmware is not recognizing that the KAT2 is not present.
Make certain that all wires to the KAT2 board are present and well soldered.
It also could be that the KAT2 firmware has failed.

Back the power off below the 12 watts, and see if you get anything.

If I remember correctly, 5 watts is a power level to avoid... As is 50
Watts. I believe it messes with the TX calibration.

Good Evening,

?? The snow is almost gone.? Sun, rain, and higher temperatures have
caused some flooding.? The trees have been pruned of branches, tops,
weakly attached needles, and most of the tufts of lichen.? Usnea strands
provide deer with a lot of carbohydrates and some protein.? The birds
are back fluffing up the forest floor.? Now the cyanobacteria can thrive
while fixing nitrogen.

?? The sun has been pretty active this week.? A large flare on the back
side caused some radio black outs.? A solar stream is due on the 16th.?
Conditions should range from noisy to very noisy. Hopefully QSB will be
slow.? Space Weather says the CME will mostly miss us.? Propagation will
be interesting.

?? This break in winter weather will let me work on another antenna.? I
need to gather all the broken antenna material and see how many radials
I can scavenge.? Antennas only last a few winters before the snow in the
trees chews them up.? I also have 150 feet of CAT6 cable for a more
extensive ground plane.

Please join us on (or near):

14050 kHz at 2300z Sunday? (3 PM PST Sunday)
?7047 kHz at 0030z Monday? (4:30 PM PST Sunday)

  ?? 73,
  ????? Kevin. KD5ONS

Chuck, I'm glad you're happy with it. But the fact that KV5J is selling a
separate box to update the W2 kind of argues for my point that the W2 needs a
design refresh. Read the reviews on eHam and you'll see what I mean.
https://www.eham.net/reviews/view-product?id=14820
For reference, here's KV5J's site:
https://kv5j.com/store/product/digital-display-unit-for-elecraft-w2-watt-meter
My guess is that Elecraft will update the W2 when they can't get components to
manufacture it any longer, and if they still want to sell wattmeters at that
time. Same as any electronics manufacturer does.

73, -Steve WX2S

Chuck GuentherSat, 15 Jan 2022 10:01:28 -0800In terms of modernizing the
Elecraft W2, I'm surprised no one so far has mentioned the excellent digital
display unit offered by KV5J. The combo works great.73,
Chuck? NI0C

I have not heard this either. Is this in the manual? 5 watts would be a
tough output to avoid if you enjoy QRP.
