Yes. In lay terms, it's a property of directional microphones with a
single rear opening. EV is well known for their Variable-D cardioid
mics, like the RE10-11-15-16-18-20-27 mics, which have multiple rear
openings spaced along the "barrel" of the mic. Proximity effect (bass
boost when very close to the sound source) is greatly reduced by this
construction. Their first mic of this type was the 666, known as the
"Buchannon Hammer," because EV was based in Buchannon, MI, and one of
the company's owners demonstrated its ruggedness by driving nails with
it. :) For a few years, AKG and Shure both made a few variable-D mics,
but they're long discontinued. I still own one, the AKG D224, which is a
very nice mic.
