I want to thank those who made suggestions on how to find my problem.

I spend a couple of hours relearning how to use my main backup rig (an Orion
2---it is not a useful backup if it takes that long---I guess I need to turn it
on and make all of the necessary changes in switches and settings more often).
Then I spent a bit more time figuring out how to get it to do FT8. After I did
that and made a few QSOs, I thought I would make the changes to go back to the
K3. When I did, the noise problem was no longer there.

I have no idea what was going on. But now I can change to my backup in minutes
instead of hours.

Subject: Noise problem with my K3

For the first time in its 13-year life, I am experiencing a problem with my K3.
I first noticed this last night while operating FT8 where the waterfall lit up
in yellow. At first, I thought it was some kind of RFI, but it is pretty much
the same on all bands and antennas (including my dummy load). It sounds like
white noise and varies between S2 and S3. I also checked with another radio
this morning, and the noise is not present. So it seems to be generated inside
the radio. Everything else seems to work fine, but hearing weak signals is not
possible!

Any suggestions would be welcome.
