He never said what kind of antenna he was using. A lossy antenna is much worse on transmit than it is on receive. You can easily tolerate 20 dB or more loss on receive (for pretty much ANY rig) ... but not on transmit, especially in a contest like FD where there is tons of QRM on the other end.
