Geoff, GM4ESD, makes some excellent observations about using other types of multi-wire line to maintain low resistive losses and to provide a lower-impedance line when needed.
Jack Bindle took me to task, quite appropriately, about one statement in my first comments in this thread in a private message. My example using typical SWRs that may be encountered causing coax and open wire line to have similar losses is too simplistic. A look at any of the charts comparing loss in various types of transmission line will bear this out. The plot for open wire line is always far, far below the best coaxial line.
