A mic preamp. You can buy some pretty serviceable mixing boards for very little money. Plug your mic into a cheap Behringer UB502 or UB802 mixer and send the output into your rig's mic jack. You'll get variable input gain plus some EQ. While Behringer stuff isn't really all that great, it is more than good enough for ham use.
I use an older Behringer 8 channel board with my ham gear. It is a great way to mix the audio from 2 rigs into a single set of headphones.
