It's fixed now - thanks to Mike Short and John, K7UP for their quick response.
It was indeed the side tone source parameter accessed from the edit mode secondary menu under the ST-L menu. I have not idea how this got messed up - but I was using Ham Radio Deluxe remotely recently, and I suspect somehow I accidentally changed this parameter. Thanks again everyone.
