You might have seen my post asking for clarification too. I'm pretty sure KRX3 will always use VFOb and can not be switched at present. My understanding is that with the sub on, its audio goes to the right channel of the stereo output and VFOa's audio goes to the left channel. That's regardless of SPLIT or not. So in a pile-up, you can here both the freq when the op is working split. In other situations, you might be calling on a fixed freq and listening for CQs on other freq.
