And, imho, the use of ALC to continuously control the exciter is usually not a
good idea, unless the timing and other characteristics of the ALC match the
exciter perfectly.

        I agree.  I have *never* used ALC in >50 years.  It causes
more problems than it solves, especially on CW.  However, like
QSK which I also never use (for reliability and signal quality
reasons), ALC should be available for those who really want it.
