Brian,

Problem: Receive was intermittent, transmit was no output along with ERR TxG.

Turned out that it was the chip resistor providing voltage to VCO amplifier Q3 in the synthesizer. One end of the resistor hadn't reflowed right (solder hadn't wicked up the end), and it was open circuit, even though it looked OK. Even under strong magnification it wasn't obvious. So the synthesizer usually wasn't putting out enough for the mixer. The mixer would work sometimes, then sometimes not. One touch of the soldering iron, and the VCO output was up over a volt, and the mixer was happy.

Credit and thanks to Gary, and finally to Wayne, for helping me track this one down. It was an interesting challenge!
