Good Evening,
Earlier this week I asked for some reports on 40 meter activity. Between
the respondents' notes and my own experience I find I should move the forty
meter net earlier to allow for better propagation. The best would be to hold
the second net right after the first net. However, that leaves me no time for
dinner. If I could put something into the oven before 2300z and eat around
five PM local I would be OK. I don't know anything which takes that long to
cook which I have on hand. My cooking skills have not yet grown to that level.
How would 2300z and 0100z work? Last week there was a rather long gap between
the two nets. I'll close it up so we have a better chance. Secondly, Tom
(N0SS), had an ice storm which bowed his beam but broke his dipole. He will
not be available on 40 meters until he can find the wire underneath the snow,
ice, and debris. His skills will be missed.
Today I had one of those days where I should have just stayed in bed! Seems
like everything I touched broke. It took most of the day but I got most of the
broken things fixed again. But that means I got none of what I wanted to get
done. I reiterate: I should have stayed in bed! While I was digging for tools
I found something Pat bought for N6KR. I forgot to take it to him at
Pacificon. Maybe next year since he never leaves California. She bought it in
2003 so a few more years won't hurt.
The sun has been active this week. A few times it even shone down on our
house here in Oregon. Other than that it produced a very large and now active
sunspot area. Hopefully that will allow us better conditions for tomorrow's
activities. I did have one clear evening this week. I was out collecting a
few loads of firewood when I looked up. The sky was very clear and the stars
were bright. I stacked the wood inside and then went back out to look. After
a few minutes to allow my eyes to adjust I found Perseus at the zenith. I then
found Comet Holmes. It had grown quite a bit since the last time I had had a
chance to see it. It had also moved away from Mirfak. Averted vision helped
me find it but then my eyes got better so I could see it directly. Too large
for even the lowest power eyepiece I own; so I just looked. Nice.
