It is adequate, but you can get frequency data and control for your spectrum display, so you see the frequency you're on, click on a signal and have it recenter in the filter passband, and change bands/frequencies from your program. The "rig control" feature is supported by a number of digimode programs. If you use the KIO2, you won't need to use the PTT line with such programs, as they can send the K2's TX and RX commands over the serial port, so you only need the one serial port, not two.
