This is what your feel is best for you. However, my PTT line is dedicated to my RTTY TNC. I would have to remove it or switch it out for sound card modes. Sound card digital modes here are only to chase a rare one that doesn't show up on other modes. Having VOX activated transmit is simple and what I use.
If by "software" PTT you mean a command (rather than a line on some cable) that activates xmit, yes that a super way. However, it isn't supported by quite a few rigs. I had it with an FT1000MP and it worked great. My current rig doesn't have it. Does the K3? I hope they don't eliminate this VOX capability. Yes there are drawbacks -- like I have to turn of the DX spot announce function of spotting program!
