Well, it turns out I'm part of the problem :-)
I was so sure I had the blade in the red plug
all the way in, but I just checked it under a
lighted magnifying glass, and it had not gone
over the retaining ridge near the front opening.
I pushed some more and got it to click over
the ridge.

So, the connector is back in service, but you are right,
there is not a great retaining force in these connectors.
I've never used them before, but from the way others
talked about them, I expected more.

I'll just have to see how they do in service.
