Well...it's not a complete fix, but if you obtain a nylon washer with an
inside diameter that will pass the shaft and an outside diameter that is
about the size of the knob or slightly smaller, you can put it over
the shaft and it will help hold it straight. I found appropriate washers
at my local hardware store.
