I'm not trying to get into the band stacking registrars discussion.
Just when I switch bands, I want things to stay where they are at.
As an example, I decided to play rtty late in the afternoon but there
wasn't much activity on 20m. So I popped into all the rtty sections
of the bands. Whether I did it by direct entry (quite handy) or the
band switch, if on any of those bands I switched to, I had been in a
different mode last time I was there, I then had to change modes also.
So eventually, I switch through all the bands, and they are now set to
rtty. I now decide to go back through and look at some CW activity.
I set things up where I am at, but then as I start switching through
each of the bands, they are all in rtty mode, and have to be changed
over to cw as I go through.
Seems to me, if you sit down and get a setup (mode) you like, then you
switch to the other band, why does the mode need to change?
Or maybe it is a feature, and I do not understand the benefit it is
giving me. Not sure. If it is a useful feature that many like, then
it would be handy to turn it off and on, for those that do not like it.
I will try some of the memory suggestions, though this seems a bit
complicated, for just wanting to wander around the bands. Help me
understand if I may be missing something here.

I haven't been following this series of threads very closely so I'm not
sure what you're reacting to and looking for. The BAND rocker switch
takes you to the last used mode and freq on each band. I find it very
easy to set up quick memories for each band with CW band edge in VFO A
and an SSB band edge in VFO B. M->V, [n] takes me to a band on CW and,
if I want SSB, A/B gets me there. For many scenarios this is actually
less effort than on many classic radios. I also set up the per-band
memories so M1 is a favorite CW freq on the current band, M2 is a
favorite SSB freq and M3 is digital. Dunno what to do with M4. ;-)
If this isn't what you're trying to do, try asking again.

Is it possible to work from the VFO, and not have to change modes
every time I switch bands? The only work around I have found is to
go through all the bands and set them to what I am working on at the
moment. I understand the K2 is the same way, and it bothered me
there also. I'm not trying to get into another band stacking
register thing discussion.
If I have a certain setup in front of me on the rig, just because I
change frequencies, does not mean that I want to change other settings.
I have looked through the manual and the config menu and I cannot
find anything applicable.
Being a newer ham, licensed in 2001, I do not recall this happening
on other rigs. All I have had before the K2/K3 was a Kenwood
TS-570DG, and an IC-718, so it is possible that this is like this
for a good reason, that I am just missing.
