Good Evening,
The weather has been rather nice here this week. Cool enough to let me cut
and split wood but warm enough so I don't need a fire. It is getting dry now
that the sun is out more often. The fire danger signs are up and the burn ban
is in effect. Luckily the fire danger is very low so we are in pretty good
shape. South of the border, in Schwarzeneggerland, the conditions are dry and
the fires are many. I am glad they are recalling their National Guard troops
and using them for what they do very well: fight fires and aiding the
populations of the several states. Sending the National Guard overseas is
wrong when they are needed here for their valuable emergency services.
Conditions on twenty meters during the past week has been ucky to say the
least. I have tried to keep a sked into Alabama but been stymied at every
pass. I have been too busy with other concerns to try any other band or time
of day. My antennas have survived my tree felling operation. I have been
proceeding from leeward to windward which is also downhill to uphill. Two of
the doublets are attached to trees in the windstorm effected area so I must be
careful. When the time comes to fell the windward most trees I'll drop my
wires and proceed. There are some very large (four foot DBH) trees which need
to be felled. Notching them is difficult because I have to aim upward from
beneath the tree. I have not been squished yet so my luck is holding :) Once
I clear out the space the surviving trees will add lumber rapidly. Plus I can
get up the two wavelength 160 meter loop I've been dreaming about. Twenty
acres should be enough room to find the space for a decent antenn
 a :)
