"With that, what filter should I go with to maximise my CW experience? "
I took the posted advice that only the first 30 dB of attenuation really
mattered for a roofing filter, and therefore I ordered the 5-pole CW filters
(500 and 200 Hz). I am happy with the choice. The main reason to use the
roofing filters in the first place is to prevent the DSP from overloading. I
once had a receiver that had FB DSP selectivity but no roofing filters and
that would overload ("de-sense") when strong signals were nearby. It is a
good feeling to dial the selectivity down to 200 Hz and know that nothing
will get through above and below that little window. Ringing doesn't seem to
be an issue.
Of course, YMMV, and other people feel good about having the steeper skirts
of the 8-pole filters.
