I can't recall which one, but I had a radio that worked exactly this way. My suggestion would be not to change existing button usage at all, but do as Vic suggests, and allow a programmable button to be set to a "quick split," that would equalize frequency (or maybe put in a variable offset), turn on SUB and go into SPLIT mode.
