Hi Alan and all, You might want to consider rolling your own, with a homemade coil, a slider for the coil, grab a polycon or air variable, a set of headphones. Now the decision, a pin and a piece of galena, or a razor blade... or dissimilar metal contact... and a long wire antenna... make it your self... or rather let him make it himself... with a lotta help, and watch his eyes light up when he hears things.
Nothing better than getting him started early working with his hands, and watching what he makes work, just like it is supposed to... well.. maybe after some adjustments.... but then even any of the Elecraft products need final checkout, and in some cases a bit of alignment too.
