Good Evening,
Both nets were run during noisy band conditions. When a KX1 and a K1 give
the strongest signals one has to wonder what is happening. Scanning the check
in list I notice something odd. There are KX1s, K1s, and K3s, where have all
the 6000+ K2s gone? Maybe we are just in a hiatus of K2 useage but I would not
like to think they have been superseded by the K3. They are a great rig and
they use very little power on receive. Maybe this is not a good season for
their use.
However, today was wonderful here on the Coast Range of Oregon. It was
sunny and almost warm :) I took advantage of the sun to drive my F250 in 4
wheel low out into the boonies. Even though the ground was soggy I was able to
drive my rig down a medium slope to gather wood I cut and split during the
summer. Two more days of sunny weather are forecast. Hopefully I can gather
all the wood and bring it home. Then it can snow as much as it likes and I
will be cozy in my hobbit hole. Luckily this hobbit (yes his toes are hairy)
has a decent set of antennas, some fine Elecraft rigs, and a nice set of deep
cycle marine batteries. Said hobbit can make comms no matter what.
The time change gave interesting propagation but I'll keep the net times the
way they are for another week. From what I have read the ionosphere is in
upheaval so I imagine propagation will improve over the next few days.
Sweepstakes is coming which will probably drive us off the air. I will check
the times to make sure. However I have been invited to work the contest with
another op and advised by a second to take advantage of this opportunity to
improve my skills. In ARES we train incessantly, why should other branches of
the amateur radio service be any different?

If there are any errors in the above lists please send me an email. I did
receive a few emails during my dinner break between nets. Propagation was not
good to some parts of the continent so hopefully when we reconvene it will have
improved. I need to check the times of the Sweepstakes contest but examining
the database we have been on hiatus each time it has occurred previously. This
time should be no different. So barring some change I will see you all in two
weeks.
