Mike, Easier than trying to absorb the entire manual, I go to the menu pages and try to remember what menu items are available - that gives me a good idea about how the radio can be configured. Then if I want some particular behavior, I study that portion of the manual. The buttons are usually relatively easy and self explanatory because they have labels.
