The DSP uses a table of values which map hardware IF gain to the hardware AGC voltage. The default values happen to be the curve that matches my development K3's characteristics :-) The observation you made on your radio's characteristics are the net difference between my development radio's IF gain versus AGC voltage and your radio's similar gain. When you run the RF Gain Cal, the K3 measures the attenuation for your particular radio and stores the results in non-volatile memory.
