Years ago, back in the mid-1970s I worked on a signal processing project for 
the government.  We produced spectrograms which are used for the same purpose 
as waterfall displays.  We produced spectrograms on (then) very expensive 
RAMTEK color graphic displays and also printed on paper.  My role though was 
not the signal processing, I worked on the software for the display and device 
drivers for the special spectrogram printers.
