I have had great luck with a thing called an edgeport made by insideout networks. Not sure if it exists anymore. They offered 4, 8, and 16 port versions that I know of. Gets power from the usb port, and serials can be defined as rs232 or 422. Supports all the hardware handshake lines. All my k3 connections are through this device under windows xp, and never had a problem. Hope this helps someone.
