Getting power from a USB port is problematic unless the draw is very light. More than one serial port driven from a USB is driving on the edge unless you know the circuit details behind the USB port. Sometimes even one serial port is an issue given the circuit details of what is reading the serial signals.
It is very clear with various experiences with USB ports, that there are USB ports, and there are USB ports. The "U" in universal serial port ain't so U as it's cracked up to be.
