That behavior indicates that the dot and dash contacts are connected together somewhere. It could be at the paddle, in the cable, or at the plug. You can confirm that by checking continuity between the tip and ring of the stereo plug - they should show infinite resistance, but in your case I think you will find it to be close to zero ohms.
