You must absolutely use the MONITOR to help you adjust. Another thing that helps is working on your voice. You don't need a top 40 radio voice, but you do need to speak clear and concise. The MONITOR will help you in part to this end also. Don't forget to put the K3 in test mode or zero power when trying this out.
