The following post is fitting for this list, or at least for MikeO. ------------ Forwarded Post ------------ Date: Sun, 19 Nov 2000 19:37:47 -0800 From: Misha [address omitted to prevent hate mail from Mike} Subject: Re: Where Do We Draw The Line? To: SANET[censored] Howdy, all-- The Department of Keyboard Technology offers an answer as to where to draw the line: YOUR DELETE KEY. Those of you who don't like what any particular person on this list has to say, just hit the delete key when you see their messages. And stop filling all our in-baskets with umbage-taken missives. USE YOUR DELETE KEY. This is a forum. If you don't like what any particular individual has to say, delete their messages or filter them to the trash. Among the 800 or so subscribers to SANET, there may be people who are perfectly glad to read the words of someone you disagree with--and intolerance and attacks are likely to lead only to self-censorship of those lurkers, or indeed anyone who disagrees with whoever is complaining the loudest. USE YOUR DELETE KEY. Can we step away from the stick-poking and posturing, and, if someone has something to share, they can do so, and let other people decide whether they want to read it? USE YOUR DELETE KEY. Can we drop this issue of calling in the list administrator to play Discourse Cop? Andy's got about a million better things to be doing with his time and attention. USE YOUR DELETE KEY. And can we for the love of lefse vent our crankiness at the change of seasons elsewhere? As Mike Miller observed, this seems to happen every November on SANET. Each year. With a new set of people finding something over which to poke another subscriber with sticks. We've all got delete keys. If something isn't worth discussing, the topic will--or should be allowed to--peter out. peace mish
