Some great advice here, bike break are another one that could 
conceivably be okay.  As concerns safety, I was looking at some 
interesting brassware, and it appears that brass contains lead, and 
anything with lead is toxic guys and girls! 

I managed to get hold of some really thick wire at the limit to what 
can be bent with pliers, and have bent it so that the pointy bit is 
rounded over into an eye, and then melted some plastic from a tobacco 
pouch which should be toxin free as a kind of plastic solder to round 
off the edge of the eye, it's a pretty good way to do it.
