ALthough I have used them in the past I would not recommend them. Although they are limited at about 15 volts they have no current limit except a very high current primary fuse. In addition, although some line electro equipment can be safe, I would not trust a train transformer, specially an old one. Finally I believe the ones for HO and smaller guages may be DC "all pain , no fun".
As an aside to anyone interested. ANy electronic repair center should be able to test any piece of line operated equipment for power line leakage. B&K makes a meter just for this application.
