Hmm, I think my assumption is that the welcome screen should be used as a first-run case. After that, the application should be restoring the previous session. Or if you'd like to provide a projects "library" that should probably be done in a more proper way (more details, better browsing modes, expecting more projects) than appending a list of recent items to a welcome screen.
