Do you see that shadow too when you activate the magnification effect  
meant for handicapped people (Universal Access)? Can you make a  
screen-shot and attach it to an eMail? I wonder, whether the effect  
you see is real. What I can observe, with rc2, looks more like a font  
anti-aliasing/smoothing effect – just a bit reversed with light text  
on dark background!

There are utilities that can set the level below which no font anti- 
aliasing will happen. You might try to set that value one point above  
the text size and see what happens to the shadow.
