I'm a bit unsure what leads to these byte-compilation errors, I would  
sometimes get them when testing releases for GNUstep and usually got  
around them by running compilation manually on the file in question  
(with the same emacs!).

What happens if you try to run the compiled *step emacs using the lisp  
files generated from the X11 install?
